University of Pretoria Dean and Professor of Science Education, , Mamelodi Campus
Pretoria, South Africa
I am Dean and Professor of Science Education at the University of Pretoria's (UP) Mamelodi Campus in Pretoria South Africa. UP is a historically advantaged and largest research intensive university in South Africa with over 50 000 students. My main responsibility is to oversee the Anchor Strategy, of the University at the Mamelodi Campus, located in one of the historically disadvantaged township communities in Pretoria. Mamelodi Township consists of formal and informal human settlements that are predominantly Black and characterized by high levels of poverty, unemployment and low incomes. The campus has been designated as a "hub for community engagement activities" and UP's Social Innovation Hub. The strategy for the campus, organized under the rubric of the Mamelodi Collaborative (MC), is a partnership with the Rutgers University Newark. It brings together researchers and students from diverse disciplines at the UP and RU-N to address the strategic objectives of their respective institutions in collaboration with the communities in Newark and Mamelodi as well as partners. The inter-faculty, inter-institutional collaboration also explores collaborative development of masters and doctoral curricula including collaborative teaching and research. Our work is divided into five thematic areas: Building Educational Pathways for Post secondary School Attainment, Science and the Urban Environment, Strong and Healthy Neighborhoods, Leveraging the Arts and Culture and Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. The collaboration, funded by the Kresge Foundation aims to develop cross national models for anchor institution work.
